What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a serious health problem. It affects nearly 23 million Americans. One-third of them don’t even know they have it. And – there is no cure.

Your body needs energy for everything you do, from running to sleeping. Diabetes affects the way your body turns food into energy. Normally, your body converts sugars, starches and other foods you eat into “fuel.” With diabetes, something goes wrong with this process. This affects all parts of the body. It can lead to blindness, heart disease, kidney failure, nerve and blood vessel damage.

In the five minutes, it will take you to read this brochure, six people in the United States will learn they have diabetes. This is almost 2,000 people a day. It is estimated that almost 20% of adults over age 55 have diabetes. And, with its complications, diabetes is truly one of the worst diseases of our time.

How the Order of the Amaranth Helps Fight Diabetes

In 1979, the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation was formally adopted and diabetes became the primary philanthropic project through which the Order of the Amaranth works for the betterment of mankind. The Order of the Amaranth has mobilized the efforts of its membership to prevent and cure diabetes and to help improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Thanks to the dedicated support of our members worldwide, we have raised over $10 million in the fight against diabetes.

All funds raised by the Order of the Amaranth go directly to diabetes research through the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation. We do not support fundraising or management costs. The American Diabetes Association reviews and selects the research scientists to be funded. Through this peer-reviewed system, contributors are assured that their gifts support the most important diabetes research and that the research results are shared throughout the scientific community.

A proud moment for Washington State

We received the award for our total donation of $500,000.00 to Diabetes Research. Our state also was number one in donations for the year.

Scholarships

The Grand Court of Washington Order of the Amaranth announces the 2022-2023 scholarship applications. These $1,000.00 Scholarships are for students attending or planning to attend or are in college and trade/vocational school. These Scholarships are for the 2022-2023 School year (Fall Term 2022 through Summer 2023). Deadline for Scholarship Applications is January 1, 2022. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Student eligibility requirements for these Scholarships shall be:

  1. A minimum of a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)

  2. A permanent resident of the state of Washington or belong to Rainbow for Girls in the Washington/Idaho Jurisdiction.  

  3. A member of Job’s Daughters, Rainbow for Girls, or DeMolay (including Majority Members and Senior DeMolay) Attach a copy of a current dues card.

  4. Or the Son, Daughter, Step-son, Step-daughter, Grandchild, or Great Grandchild of a Master Mason in good standing in the State of Washington.   Attach a copy of a current dues card of the Master Mason.*   

  5. Or the Son, Daughter, Step-son, Step-daughter, Grandchild, or Great Grandchild of a member of the Order of the Amaranth in the State of Washington in good standing.  Attach a copy of a current dues card of the Amaranth Member.*

  6. Or a member of the Order of the Amaranth in the State of Washington in good standing.  Attach a copy of a current dues card.

  7. Requests for special eligibility may be submitted to the Scholarship Chairperson for consideration by the committee on a case by case basis.

    *If the relative is deceased, the applicant must explain the relationship and submit proof of  good standing of the relative in their organization at the time of their death.)

Scholarship Benefit Committee

Benevolent Foundation

The Benevolent Foundation fund was created by the Washington Grand Court and consists of two sections. One is comprised of all funds in the Amaranth Benevolent Foundation and the second section is known as the Emergency Fund. This section receives all interest earnings from the permanent fund.

As to where the money comes from for the permanent fund, each court is assessed ten cents for each of their members, based on the year-end report. Also, any gifts, donations, or bequests and endowments from court members or other persons or corporations, are deposited in the permanent fund and/or Lois Levine fund.

There is also a fund that is administered by the Benevolent Committee and that is the Lois Levine foundation which is to be used for the relief of members suffering from Cancer.

The interest earnings only of the permanent (emergency fund) are to be used for the relief of members of subordinate courts or their minor children. All disbursements must be authorized by a majority of the Executive Board which is composed of three members, one of which is elected each year at the Grand Court Session.

To assist the Executive Board in identifying members needing assistance the Grand Court is broken up into eight districts and courts within each District elects an area Director for a three-year term. To help the area Directors, if you know of a member needing assistance, please let them know, remember we cannot help unless we know there is a need for it. Assistance is given confidentially and we believe it has been maintained through the years.

Lois Levine Fund

The Lois Levine Fund came into being through a bequest of SK David Levine in his will to the Grand Court in 1973. He requested a special fund be set up and be known as the “Lois Levine Fund”. He bequeathed a sum of $5000.00 for that purpose. The Grand Court was to match this amount before any was to be used and then only for those suffering from cancer.

HL Lois Levine served as GRM in 1941-42 and SRM in 1952-53.

She passed away from cancer March 29, 1965.

Only the interest of the Fund may be used for relief of a member of the Order.

The fund is administered by the Benevolent Board of Directors.
